Tim Kaine (born Timothy Michael Kaine on February 26, 1958 in Saint Paul, Minnesota) is an American politician, serving as a United States Senator in Virginia. Tim was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, but grew up in the Kansas City area. After graduating from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s degree in economics, he attended Harvard Law School. He graduated with his legal degree in 1983 and passed the bar exam in Virginia. He clerked for Judge R. Lanier Anderson III of the U.S. Court of Appeals on the 11th Circuit, practicing law in Richmond for 17 years. As a private lawyer, he represented people who had been denied housing opportunities due to discrimination. He was elected the mayor of Richmond in 1998, serving two terms. His work led to a 55% drop in the city’s homicide rate. He ran for lieutenant governor in 2002, winning with 50% of the vote. He served until 2005, when he ran and was elected as governor of Virginia. During his tenure, he notably gave the Democratic response to President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address in 2006. In 2012, Tim ran for the U.S. Senate to retire Jim Webb. He defeated former governor George Allen in the general election.

Tim married Anne Holton in 1984. They have three children together — Nat, Woody and Annella. Tim was raised Catholic and he continues to maintain a strong faith. Tim was rumored to be Barack Obama’s pick for Vice President in 2008, before the role went to Joe Biden. In 2016, Tim’s name was also tossed into the mix as a possible VP for Hillary Clinton.
