Elizabeth Holmes was the CEO and founder of the medical tech company Theranos. The company claimed to have invented revolutionary technology in the world of blood testing that would allow for smaller amounts of blood to be drawn. Unfortunately, whistleblowers inside the company tipped reporters off to claims that the tests were inaccurate, and Elizabeth was barred by certain regulatory agencies. Amid controversy surrounding the inaccuracy claims, a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission charged the company and Elizabeth with securing millions of dollars through false claims, which she settled in a lawsuit. She was also charged with 12 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is currently on trial. She could face up to 20 years in prison and has pleaded not guilty. Elizabeth and the Theranos debacle were the subject of the 2019 HBO documentary ‘The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley.’
