He and his family rose to fame when A&E documented their duck company on the show “Duck Dynasty.” Phil used the show to open up about his past struggle with alcoholism, and his salvation through finding religion. A supporter of the Churches of Christ, Phil stresses the importance of prayer in his episodes, and has come under criticism from the network and viewers for his prayers. Phil came under fire in December 2013 when he released an interview with GQ magazine calling homosexuality a sin, and following his homophobic comments up with racist slurs and further shocking comments. He was indefinitely suspended from A&E because his opinions did not reflect the network or show’s beliefs, but he fired back that it was an invasion of the freedom of speech.
