Zooey Deschanel (born Zooey Claire Deschanel on January 17, 1980 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. Zooey is the daughter of actress Mary Jo Deschanel and sister Emily Deschanel. Zooey spent much of her young life on set of the movies of her father, director Caleb Deschanel. While finishing her education at Crossroads, she befriended Jake Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson. Zooey sang throughout school and planned to pursue a musical theater career. She attended Northwestern University but dropped out to pursue acting. She had a guest appearance on Veronica’s Closet before she made her film debut in 1999’s Mumford. She co-starred in Almost Famous in 2000, and landed her first lead role in 2003’s All the Real Girls. Later that year, she appeared in the Will Ferrell Christmas comedy, Elf. With her career taking off, Zooey appeared in movies Winter Passing, Failure to Launch and (500) Days of Summer. Since Summer 2011, she has starred in the Fox sitcom, New Girl. Zooey also performs in the band She & Him with singer M. Ward.

Zooey is allergic to eggs, dairy and wheat gluten. Zooey married Ben Gibbard in 2009. They separated in 2011 and divorced the next year. In 2014, Zooey began dating producer Jacob Pechenik. In Jan 2015, they announced they were engaged and that Zooey was expecting their first child. Zooey gave birth to their daughter on Aug. 3, 2015 and revealed they had married in secret.
