‘Top Gun’ is an action drama film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer that premiered on May 16, 1986. The film was inspired by an article (“Top Guns”) published in California magazine.
Naturally, the film starred one and only Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise, along with Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt. While Cruise portrayed lead character Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, McGillis portrayed the lead character’s love interest, Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood.
Eventually in 2015, the film was selected by the United States Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry. It was selected because of its “cultural, historical, and aesthetic” significance.
Indeed, today it remains quite a big deal, and its sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is scheduled for release on December 23, 2020 — a remarkable 34 years later!
