Princess Mako is a member of the Japense Imperial family. She is the niece of Emperor Naruhito and granddaughter of former Emperor Emeritus Akihito. Starting in 2017, Mako came under fire from the Japanese public when she got engaged to her college sweetheart Kei Komuro, who is a commoner. They were set to get married in 2018, but their wedding was delayed by 3 years due to controversy surrounding the relationship and an alleged money scandal involving Kei’s mother. On October 26, Mako and Kei finally tied the knot, which meant she was no longer a member of the royal family due to Japanese law. The couple did not do a formal wedding, but instead registered their union at a government office. They will be moving to New York City together, where Kei is a lawyer.

Here, Princess Mako is pictured at the Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition in Paro, Bhutan on June 4, 2017. To see more photos of Mako, click through the gallery.
