Ilhan Omar is the Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota who represents the state’s 5th district. She is the first Somali-American elected to Congress, and since assuming office in January 2017, she has been a frequent target of racist attacks by President Donald Trump and his followers. Omar is part of “The Squad” in Congress, a group of Progressive Democratic Reps., including Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. Trump once tweeted that the congresswomen, all US citizens and women of color, should “go back” to “the places from which they came,” which garnered national outrage and condemnation from their colleagues in the House and Senate.
