Gwen became famous for starting the Christian diet program ‘The Weigh Down Worshop.’ The popular program spread throughout the U.S., as well as in the U.K. and Canada. Gwen then launched the Remnant Fellowship Church, which has been accused of being a cult. Gwen was also controversial for promoting parents to physically abuse their children in the love of God. Gwen was married to David Shamblin, with whom she had two children, before she ended up with actor Joe Lara. On May 29, 2021, Gwen, Joe, and five others were killed in a private plane crash. Her children now run her church.

Gwen is the subject of the HBO Max documentary ‘The Way Down.’ Former members of the church appear in the documentary. It also explores the aftermath of the plane crash that Gwen died in. Check out more photos of Gwen Shamblin in this gallery.
