President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sit next to former President Barack Obama, whom Joe had served as vice president under, in the first pew.

Few leaders have received the type of bipartisan support that former Secretary of State Colin Powell did both in his life, and was shown after he died on October 18, 2021. Powell had been a general in the United States army, and he went on to serve as a National Security Advisor then a chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He made history in 2001, when he was appointed as the secretary of state by then-President George W. Bush. Powell was the first Black American to serve in the position.

While much of his time as an official was under Republican presidents, Powell broke with his party to endorse Barack Obama during both of his elections.
