Celebrity Health Scares & Accidents 2023: Madonna Hospitalized, Jay Leno Burned & More

Even though they’re celebrities, stars are just like us when it comes to health and safety – sometimes, things don’t go as planned.

But don’t worry, we’ve got all the info you need on the celebs who’ve had health scares and accidents in 2023, right here.

Madonna is just one of the A-listers who suffered a health scare in 2023. The “Queen of Pop” was hospitalized on June 24, 2023, after she contracted a bacterial infection. Her talent manager, Guy Oseary, took to Instagram four days later to announce the somber news.

“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU,” his statement read. “Her health is improving. However, she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected. At this time, we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour. We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”

One story that had everyone talking was NFL pro Damar Hamlin’s mid-game collapse on Jan. 2, 2023. The football player suffered cardiac arrest during a game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals and fell to the ground, leaving fans and players alike in shock.

But thanks to the quick actions of medical personnel, Damar was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he received top-notch care for over a week. He was later transferred to Buffalo General Hospital to continue his recovery and managed to make a triumphant return to the field to support his teammates at the Jan. 23, 2023 game. Later, Damar was a guest of honor at the Feb. 12 Super Bowl, where he was spotted posing with fans at the Big Game.

MTV star Nelson Thomas took to Instagram on Mar. 14, 2023, to reveal he had been rescued from a burning car just nine days prior. “I was involved in a car accident. I want to thank kJ: @kj_osborn_ @nfl @vikings for being on the scene and filming my rescue. I am forever grateful to Abdulmejied Hairedin: @_abdu6435, Rita: @Afri_qveen, and Arthur: @Arthur_1er. For pulling me out of a burning vehicle, risking their own lives to save mine. Words can’t explain how grateful I am to be alive. God is truly great and he has you in his hands no matter who you are. His wife Alejandra later took to Instagram with the health update, telling fans, “I woke up this morning and I saw the news and all your kind and worry messages, he is recovering. He is feeling much better today! The worst has already pass! Thank you all for you sweet messages we really appreciate them!

Tom Sizemore was hospitalized on Feb. 19, 2023 after suffering a brain aneurysm in the early hours of the night. The Saving Private Ryan star’s manager Charles Lago told Deadline the actor was discovered at his home at around 2 AM and subsequently transported to the hospital. “He is currently in critical condition and it’s a wait-and-see situation,” his manager said. “His family is aware and waiting for updates. There are no future updates at this time.”

Reporting straight from her hospital bed, the Selling Sunset beauty shared, “Had a minor surgery today and had a large ovarian cyst removed.” Prior to surgery, the star complained about “unexplained cramps” on social media.

President Jimmy Carter’s foundation and family announced that the former Commander in Chief had been put into hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia on Feb. 18, 2023, following a string of hospitalizations. The statement, reported by the AP, said the 95-year-old had “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.” It went on to note that the 39th president has the full support of his medical team and family, which “asks for privacy at this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.”

Jay Leno’s love of vintage cars and motorcycles has put him in serious danger several times in the past few months. The retired late-night host revealed he was pretty hurt after a Jan. 17, 2023 crash on his motorcycle. He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he suffered “a broken collarbone, two broken ribs, and two cracked kneecaps” after being knocked from his bike by an unmarked wire fence. Jay assured fans he was fine, telling the paper, “I’m OK!” and that he’d be “working this weekend.”

It was just back in Nov. 2022 when he was hospitalized for serious burns after a car went ablaze at his Burbank, California garage. Talking about the incident with People in Dec. 2022, he said, “When you work with cars, you have a lot of accidents. But this is bigger than most.”

Adele revealed she was suffering from some “bad sciatica” following her New Year’s Eve 2023 concert during her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace. During the show, she told fans, “I have to waddle these days as I have really bad sciatica.” The condition affects the lower back, causing “irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression” of the sciatic nerve.

The songstress first shared her trouble with chronic pain in 2021. She told The Face, “I’ve been in pain with my back for, like, half of my life, really. It flares up, normally due to stress or from a stupid bit of posture.”

Jeremy Renner had a seriously close call when he was injured by a snow plow on Jan. 1, 2023. The star broke over 30 bones after he reportedly rushed at the vehicle to save his nephew from being crushed. According to an incident report from police, the Marvel actor “was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

Jeremy was airlifted to the hospital, then in care for two weeks before returning home. In a Jan. 21 update on Instagram, Jeremy told fans, sharing, “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years… Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.”

Michael Flatley made a career out of being the Lord Of Dance, but the Irish performer/Riverdance creator announced that he would be stepping out of the spotlight as he battles an “aggressive form of cancer.” Sharing the news on Instagram on Jan. 12, a representative for Michael posted, “Michael Flatley has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. He has undergone surgery and is in the care of an excellent team of doctors.

Michael and family are hoping for privacy at this time. The statement concluded, “No further comments will be made at this time. We ask only for your prayers and well wishes. Thank you.”

Jill Biden went under the scalpel on Jan. 11, 2023 to remove two cancerous skin lesions. The president’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, told the AP the removed a lesion above her right eye and from her chest. Both were determined to be “basal cell carcinoma.” Tissue from a third lesion on her eyelid was still being analyzed.

President Biden was with the First Lady for the outpatient procedure, which took place at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. Dr. O’Connor said Jill was “experiencing some facial swelling and bruising, but is in good spirits and is feeling well.”

Tori Spelling opened up about her daughter Stella’s recent problems with hemiplegic migraines. During a stop by the Jeff Lewis show on Jan. 19, 2023, she said her girl’s headaches were so serious that she had to go to the ER.

The star admitted things were “not great, not great.” She went on,  “She, as you know, went to the [emergency room] now twice. So everyone knows, she went once last week, and then she went a couple of days ago and was diagnosed with a hemiplegic migraine. It was really scary I thought she had a stroke – she’s 14… I’m like, ‘how does a 14-year-old’ have a stroke?”

It’s been a tough time for Tori and family. Back in Dec. 2022, the star was hospitalized after finding she was having a “hard time breathing.”
