Cara Delevingne knows how to serve a look – and a message. From walking the high-fashion runway to the red carpet, she always turns heads. Paired with her blunt-yet-hilarious personality, she’s got everything it takes to get people talking. Unsurprisingly, things are no different when it comes to her selection of outfits for the annual Met Gala fundraiser. From her very pointed message at the 2021 Met Gala written across her Maria Grazia Chiurti-designed top – which took the form of a bulletproof vest (left) – to the plunging neckline of her studded and fierce Burberry gown from 2013’s event (right), she never misses the mark. Cara’s sharp eye for style matched with her unrelenting confidence and poise is what makes her not only a red carpet stunner, but a true fashion icon. Here’s a roundup of all of Cara’s eye-catching Met Gala looks, from her very first one in 2013 and beyond.

Cara Delevingne dressed for the Met Gala’s May 6, 2013 ‘Punk: Chaos To Couture’ exhibition with a plunging Burberry gown. Representing the punk theme of the night, the top half of the black column gown was covered in pointed gold studs. She paired the look with some long necklaces that beautifully embellished her chest and a collection of ear cuffs lining her left ear. She completed the look with a dark smokey eye and a white-studded clutch.

The Met Gala’s May 5, 2014 fundraiser celebrated ‘Great American Couturier’ Charles James with the official theme of ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion.’ While the dress code for the men was super strict (it was reported that editor of Vogue Anna Wintour required men to dress in ‘white tie and decorations’), the women of the night seemed to have more free will. This was exemplified by Cara Delevingne’s Stella McCartney fitted trousers and strappy crop top ensemble. She paired it with black and white pumps and a black clutch for a simple and chic look.

Cara Delevingne continued the trend of strappy tops for May 4, 2015’s Met Gala that celebrated ‘China: Through the Looking Glass.’ She rocked a black cutout Stella McCartney jumpsuit with a black sparkly bra and black open-toed heels. What really elevated her look, though, were the cherry blossoms painted across her arms and chest that mimicked a traditional Chinese style. They were done by celebrity tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy, per Cosmopolitan.

Cara Delevingne looked out of this world at the Met Gala on May 1, 2017. Dressing up for the ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between’ themed event, she donned a sparkling Chanel pantsuit with a plunging neckline. Honing on the sci-fi element of her look was her newly shaved head that was painted metallic silver. Finishing off the look were sparkles that cascaded down the side of her face.

Cara Delevingne attended the May 7, 2018 Met Gala dressed from head to toe to honor the theme, ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.’ The all-black Dior Haute Couture ensemble was certainly shocking with its barely-there black fabric crisscrossed between solid black panels. She wore a Dior veil that partially covered her face but allowed her short, pink hair to peak out at the top.

Cara Delevingne looked like a character straight out of Candyland in her bold and bright custom Dior look for May 6, 2019’s ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’Arrivals’ fundraiser. In a red carpet interview with Vogue, she joked she went to the ‘dentistry aisle’ of the grocery store to create her unique headpiece. She added that she believes camp is an ‘expression of your most outrageous [outfit].’

Cara Delevingne made her intentions loud and clear at the September 13, 2021 Met Gala that celebrated ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.’ Her white pumps and slim-fitting trousers were paired with a white bullet-proof vest designed by Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri that read, ‘Peg the Patriarchy.’ Speaking to Vogue (via Page Six) about the meaning behind the look, she noted, ‘It’s about women empowerment, gender equality — it’s a bit like, ‘Stick it to the man.”
