There are plenty of holiday movies to watch around Christmas, and The Family Stone is one of the ones people always watch over and over again. The film starts with Everett Stone bringing his girlfriend, Meredith, home in hopes of proposing to her on Christmas morning with his grandmother’s ring. Rachel McAdams
Rachel McAdams, 42, starred as Amy Stone, the youngest Stone sibling. She strongly dislikes Meredith and doesn’t hesitate to let everyone know it. Rachel’s role in The Family Stone came one year after her breakthrough role as Regina George in Mean Girls. The next year, she starred in successful films like Wedding Crashers and Red Eye.
Her other notable films include About Time, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and The Vow. Rachel earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2015 film Spotlight. Game Night, Doctor Strange, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga are just a few of her latest roles. She will be returning for the 2022 Doctor Strange sequel.
Rachel has been with her partner, Jamie Linden, since 2016. Their son was born in 2018. She is currently expecting her second child.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker, 55, played Meredith Morton, Everett’s uptight fiancee who doesn’t make the best impression (initially) on the Stone family. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. Her iconic series Sex and the City ended in 2004, and SJP’s role in The Family Stone was the opposite of Carrie Bradshaw.
SJP went on to reprise her role as Carrie Bradshaw in two Sex and the City movies. She starred in additional movies like Failure to Launch, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, and New Year’s Eve. Sarah returned to HBO for the series Divorce. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.
In addition to acting, SJP also has her successful shoe line. Sarah and husband Matthew Broderick welcomed twin girls via surrogate in 2009. Their first child, James, was born in 2002.
Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton, 74, played Sybil Stone, the Stone matriarch, in the 2005 holiday film. Diane is the beating heart of the film. A few years later, Diane reunited with her Family Stone co-star Rachel in the 2010 comedy Morning Glory.
The Oscar winner has starred in multiple films since The Family Stone, including Book Club, Because I Said So, and Poms. She recently reprised her role as Nina Banks from Father of the Bride for Netflix’s “mini-sequel” in 2020 and voiced the role of Michellee in the Netflix series Green Eggs and Ham.
Diane is set to return to the holiday movie universe with Family Jewels. The film will reunite her with her First Wives Club co-stars Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn.
Dermot Mulroney
Dermot Mulroney, 57, starred as Everett Stone, the dashing oldest Stone sibling. He brings Meredith home for Christmas with his family and shenanigans ensue. Following The Family Stone, Dermot had a number of roles in movies like The Wedding Date, August: Osage County, Insidious: Chapter 3, and more.
He also played Sean Pierce on Shameless from 2015 to 2017 and starred in the first season of the Amazon Prime Video series Hanna. Dermot’s recently had noteworthy recurring roles on The Righteous Gemstones, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Prodigal Son.
Claire Danes
Claire Danes, 41, played Julie Morton, Meredith’s sister who ends up falling for Everett. Claire went on to have a very successful TV career in the years after The Family Stone. She portrayed Temple Grandin in the TV film of the same name in 2010. She won her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and nabbed her second Golden Globe.
Claire’s most high-profile role to date was playing Carrie Mathison in the Showtime series Homeland. The show ran for 8 seasons. Claire won two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series during the show’s tenure.
Following her breakup with Billy Crudup, Claire married Hugh Dancy in 2009. They have two sons.
Luke Wilson
Luke Wilson, 49, played Ben Stone, the free-spirited Stone brother who eventually becomes a love interest for Meredith. Luke is Owen Wilson’s younger brother. Luke’s had a number of movie and TV roles over the years, including The Goldfinch, Zombieland: Double Tap, and more.
He starred in the HBO series Enlightened from 2011 to 2013. He’s now starring as Pat Dugan/S.T.R.I.P.E. in The CW series Stargirl. The show has been renewed for a second season.
Craig T. Nelson
Craig T. Nelson, 76, played Kelly Stone, Sybil’s husband and Stone family patriarch. After The Family Stone, the longtime actor went on to star in films like Blades of Glory, The Proposal, Soul Surfer, and more. He reunited with Diane in the movie Book Club and reprised his voice role of Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2.
Craig returned to the family patriarch role in playing Zeek Braverman in the beloved NBC series Parenthood. The show ran for 7 seasons. He’s recently appeared on Grace and Frankie and Young Sheldon.
Elizabeth Reaser
Elizabeth Reaser, 45, played Susannah Stone, the eldest Stone daughter who is expecting her second child in the film. Two years after The Family Stone, Elizabeth played Ava/Rebecca Pope on Grey’s Anatomy. She appeared in 18 episodes was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series at the 2007 Emmys.
Her biggest break was playing Esme Cullen in the Twilight Saga films. She starred in all 5 Twilight movies. Elizabeth recently played adult Shirley Crain in the critically-acclaimed first season of The Haunting of Hill House. She played Mrs. Winslow in season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Tyrone Giordano
Tyrone Giordano, 44, played Thad Stone, the youngest son in the Stone family. He’s a deaf and gay architect preparing to adopt a child with his partner, Patrick. Tyrone went on to guest star in a number of TV shows and appeared in films like Untraceable, Simone, All About Steve, and more.
His last film was The Next Three Days in 2010. He appeared in the TV short Honkers in 2011. Tyrone served as a field producer on the 2020 Netflix reality series Deaf U.
Brian J. White
Brian J. White, 45, played Patrick, Thad’s partner, in The Family Stone. Brian’s film credits post-The Family Stone include The Game Plan, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, The Cabin in the Woods, and more. Brian had recurring roles on Scandal, Mistresses, Ray Donovan, Chicago Fire.
The actor has also had series regular roles in TV series like Men of a Certain Age, Beauty and the Beast, Ambitions, and Monogamy. He has two movies in the works: The Men in My Life and The Ogilvy Fortune.
