The Exorcist: Believer Cast
Ellen Burstyn is reprising the iconic role of Chris MacNeil for the first time since the 1973 film. Fifty years later, Chris has been forever changed by what happened to her daughter Regan all those years ago.
Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr. stars as Victor Fielding. Victor has been raising his daughter on his own since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago. Lidya Jewett plays his daughter, Angela. Newcomer Olivia Marcum plays Katherine, Angela’s friend.
The Exorcist: Believer also stars The Handmaid’s Tale veteran Ann Dowd as Victor and Angela’s neighbor. Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles and Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz play Katherine’s parents.
The film was directed by David Gordon Green, best known for reviving the Halloween franchise. David co-wrote the story with Scott Teems and Danny McBride. David co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler. Executive producers include David, Danny, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek, and Atilla Yucer.
What Will The Exorcist: Believer Be About?
The official synopsis for the film reads: “Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela, on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”
The first trailer was officially released on July 25. The footage shows Angela and Katherine going missing and the mayhem that ensues when they return. There’s a particularly terrifying scene when Katherine walks into a crowded church covered in blood. She says “body and the blood” over and over again.
Chris MacNeil is summoned to help try to save Angela and Katherine from this possession. “Exorcism is a ritual. Every culture, every religion, all use different methods. It’s going to take all of them,” she says. Chris shares an intense scene with a possessed Katherine. “Don’t be scared,” Katherine mutters. Chris replies, “We’ve met before.” Katherine whispers, “Mother.” In the final moments of the trailer, Angela and Katherine are bound together, and their hearts begin to beat in sync. “God played a trick on you,” Angela says.
Will Linda Blair Return As Regan?
That remains to be seen. Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed whether or not Regan MacNeil will appear in The Exorcist: Believer. Back in March 2023, Above The Line reported that Linda Blair would be reprising her role as Regan in the sequel. Regan was at the heart of The Exorcist and ultimately survived her possession. Following The Exorcist, Linda returned to the role of Regan in the 1977 sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic.
The report claimed that she was only on set for a “few days,” but she would have a role in the film. A Blumhouse spokesperson told the outlet at the time: “Linda Blair served as an advisor on the upcoming Exorcist film.”
Will There Be More Exorcist Movies?
That’s the plan. David Gordon Green has been open about The Exorcist: Believer being the first of a planned trilogy of Exorcist films. “The first one of our trilogy is written and the second two are being outlined. So we’ve got a ways to go on that, but we know where we’re going. It’s a new journey [with] some familiar characters and some new ones as well,” the director told Collider in 2021. The second sequel in the trilogy, The Exorcist: Deceiver, will be released on April 18, 2025, according to THR.
