Sofia Coppola is one of the most celebrated filmmakers working today. The youngest child and only daughter of directors Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia, 51, has directed tons of critically-acclaimed projects on her own, including The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation, which she won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for.
The director married French indie-pop singer Thomas Mars, 48, from the band Phoenix in 2011, after the two had met while collaborating on the soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides. Before tying the knot, the couple had two daughters Romy, 16, and Cosima, 12.
While both are clearly loving parents, the two do make an effort to keep their daughters out of the spotlight. Sofia opened up about how she wanted to make sure her kids’ lives weren’t affected by her film career in a 2017 interview with The Guardian. “I don’t want them ever to be jaded,” she said. “I never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff. I just want them to have a childhood.”

Sofia had her elder daughter Romy in November 2006. Romy’s name is an homage to the director’s older brother Roman, 57, who is also a director, per Time. While the teen has had a low public profile for most of her life, she has dabbled in modeling, making her debut with Marc Jacobs in October 2020. The designer shared a few photos of Romy wearing some of his clothes on Instagram.
Besides modeling, Romy did make headlines in March 2023, when a TikTok video she shared went viral, where she shared that her parents had grounded her after she attempted to charter a private helicopter from New York to Maryland to have dinner with a friend. In the since-deleted clip, Romy makes pasta with vodka sauce, and speaks about her parents. She claimed her parents are “never home,” and joked about the incident.
Unsurprisingly given the low-profile the family keeps, Romy also explained that her parents don’t want her or her sister to have public social media profiles. “They don’t want me to be a nepotism kid, but TikTok is not going to make me famous so it doesn’t really matter,” she said.
Sofia and Thomas welcomed their younger daughter Cosima in May 2010. Shortly after Cosima’s birth, the family moved from Paris to New York City in late 2010, per The New York Post. As the parents keep both children out of the spotlight, not much is known about Cosima, but she does share a name with an Italian actress, who has starred in movies like The King Of Mykonos, per IMDb.
