If anyone believes in life after love, it’s Cher! The Goddess of Pop has been romantically linked to a few well-known names in the past. Now that she’s happily dating her boyfriend, Alexander “AE” Edwards, we’re taking a look back at her past relationships.
Warren Beatty
When she was a teenager, the “Believe” artist was in a brief romance with actor and filmmaker Warren Beatty.
Sonny Bono
Cher first met Sonny in 1962 after dropping out of high school to move to Los Angeles. One day after she met him at a party, Cher found out that Sonny was moving into the apartment next door from her’s when she was about to be evicted. The Grammy Award winner recalled how she and Sonny became roommates during Sirius XM’s The Cher Show: Making the Musical.
“I just went up and said, ‘Hi, listen, I’m going to have to move out of our apartment cause I’m sick and I don’t have any money, and I don’t want to go home and I just want to get out and do things, and I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I don’t have any place to live and blah blah blah.’ And [Bono] said, ‘Can you cook and clean?’” Cher remembered him saying.
Though Sonny flat-out told her that he didn’t “find [Cher] particularly attractive,” he let her stay in a twin bed in his house. Two years later, they exchanged vows. In 1969, they welcomed their child, Chaz Bono. However, Cher and Sonny’s marriage didn’t last, as she filed for divorce from him in 1974.
Cher later claimed to Parade that her ex-husband became a “womanizer.” Nevertheless, they patched up their differences and developed a close friendship until Sonny died in 1998.
David Geffen
The “If I Could Turn Back Time” songstress started dating David, an entertainment executive, in 1974 after calling it quits with Sonny. David and Cher dated for two years amidst her separation from her then-husband.
Greg Allman
Cher tied the knot with Greg just days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny in 1975. Though she quickly filed to separate from him the same month that they wed, the former couple reconciled and were married until 1979. The former spouses welcomed their child, Elijah Blue Allman, in 1976.
Gene Simmons
After splitting from Greg, Cher dated KISS singer Gene Simmons for two years. In 1979, Gene told PEOPLE that he considered Cher his “first love.” However, he later left the Emmy Award winner to pursue a relationship with her friend Diana Ross.
Val Kilmer
By the early 1980s, Cher and Val Kilmer dated until 1984, and though they broke up, the former couple remained friends.
Josh Donen
In 1985, Cher began a relationship with Josh, a film producer. Two years later, however, Cher confirmed they had called it quits, telling The Washington Post in 1987 that she “just didn’t want to be with him anymore as a girlfriend.”
Tom Cruise
Shortly after splitting from Josh, Cher dated Tom, whom she later called one of her “Top 5” best lovers during a 2013 interview on Watch What Happens Live. In 2008, the “Dark Lady” singer told Entertainment Tonight what went down between her and the movie star.
“It was a long, long time ago, and neither one of us ever talked about it and I don’t know why,” she explained. “When we were together, he was such a private person. He always has been until lately … Now it’s hard for me to look at this person and this press. How many times can I watch him jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch?”
Rob Camilletti
In 1986, Cher met Rob, a baker, who is almost 20 years younger than her. Though he accompanied her at the 1988 Academy Awards, the two eventually split in 1989.
Richie Sambora
Cher and Richie, a guitarist, had worked together in the past on her album Cher. It’s unclear how long they dated in the late 1980s, but their romance fizzled out by the early 1990s.
Ron Zimmerman
The singer and the famous screenwriter kept most of their relationship under wraps. After they began dating in 2010, they eventually broke up, though it’s still unclear when exactly they ended their romance.
Alexander Edwards
