Shakur Stevenson

Bio:
Shakur Stevenson (born June 28, 1997 in Newark, NJ) is a American bantamweight boxer. His grandfather began taking him to boxing gyms in Newark when he was five years old and he became hooked on the sport. He was able to compete in his first fight when he turned eight-years-old. He became the first U.S. male boxer to win both the Junior and Youth World Championships in 2013 and 2014 and a Youth Olympic Games gold medal. Shakur had an international competition record of 23-0 going into the Rio Olympics, where he made it to the finals to battle for the gold medal. While in Rio, former boxing champ Floyd Mayweather flew in to personally sign him to Mayweather Promotions, and will rep him in events following the Olympics.

Personal Life:
Shakur was named after the late rapper Tupac Shakur, and was born a year after his murder. With his boxing success in his teen years, he gained fame around the Newark community but his mother was worried that would make him a target of the notorious gang violence that plagued the city. She had him move in with his grandparents in Hampton, VA when he was 16, but he later moved back to New Jersey to live with his then and current coach Kay Koroma.
