Rooney Mara (born Patricia Rooney Mara on April 17, 1985 in Bedford, New York) is an American actress. Rooney grew up in Bedford, New York and after graduating from Fox Lane High school in 2003, she spent four months in South America as part of the Traveling School. Rooney spent a year at George Washington University before transferring to NYU. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in psychology, international social policy and nonprofits. Rooney was inspired by her older sister, Kate Mara, to pursue acting. She began while at NYU, landing bit parts and extra roles in films before making her debut in a 2006 episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her first lead role came in 2009’s Tanner Hall. In 2010, she starred in the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street as protagonist Nancy Holbrook. That year, she also appeared in The Social Network. Rooney’s biggest role came when she was cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She has continued to act in films, like Side Effects, Her and A House In the Sky. In 2015, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film, Carol.

Personal Life:
Rooney moved to Los Angeles in 2007. Since 2010, she has been dating director Charlie McDowell. Her mother’s family founded the Pittsburgh Steelers and her father’s family founded the New York Giants. She is a vegan and has involved herself in the charity Faces of Kibera, which provides support to orphans in Kenya.
