Regina King (born Regina Rene King on January 15, 1971 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actress, director and voice actress. Regina grew up in View Park-Windsor Hills, attending Westchester High School and University of Southern California. She began her acting career in 1985, playing the role of Brenda Jenkins in the television series 227. She stayed with the show until its end at 1990. From there, she had roles in films Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice and Higher Learning, as well as the 1995 comedy hit, Friday. She played the wife of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character in Jerry Maguire and the wife of Will Smith’s character in Enemy of the State. Regina also acted in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Daddy Day Care, Legally Blonde 2, A Cinderella Story and Planes: Fire & Rescue. In the early 1990s, Regina had a handful of television roles. Her major return came in 2005 when she voiced the characters of Riley and Huey Freeman in the animated series The Boondocks. In 2009, she portrayed Detective Lydia Adams on the TV drama, Southland, winning the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series in 2011. She was cast as Ailyah Shadeed in the first season of American Crime, and her acting won her the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.
