Rand Paul (born Randal Howard Paul on January 7, 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American physician and politician. Rand was born in Pittsburgh, but in 1968, he and his family moved to Lake Jackson, Texas. During high school, Rand played football and was on the swim team. Rand enrolled in Baylor University in 1981, joining the swim team while studying Biology and English. He left in 1984 to attend Duke University’s School of Medicine. He earned his M.D. for ophthalmology in 1988 before completing his residency in 1993. That same year, Rand moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky to establish his medical practice. Rand’s political life began when he was a teenager, accompanying his father, Ron Paul, to the 1976 Republican National convention. He assisted his father’s political campaigns twice – first in 1984 when Ron Paul ran for the US Senate and in 1988, when his father ran for President. While at Duke, Rand founded the North Carolina Taxpayers Union in 1991, an anti-tax organization. Rand also founded Kentucky Taxpayers United in 1993. In 2009, Rand announced he would enter the Kentucky Republican primary in order to replace the outgoing Sen. Jim Bunning. After winning the primary, Rand would go on to be elected to the US Senate in 2010. On Apr.7, 2015, Rand announced he would run for President in the 2016 Election.

Personal Life:
Rand’s libertarian politics mirror those of his father, Ron Paul. He is the middle child of five, with siblings Ronald Paul Jr., Lori Paul Pyeatt, Robert Paul and Joy Paul-Leblanc. Rand is married to freelance writer Kelley Paul. Together, the have three sons: William, Duncan and Robert.
