Preet Bahrara (born Preetinder Singh Bharara on October 13, 1968 in Firozpur, Punjab, India) is an Indian-born American lawyer. He has been referred to as one of “the nation’s most aggressive and outspoken prosecutors of public corruption and Wall Street crime.” In 2012, he was named in Time magazine as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World”. From 2009 to 2017, he served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. When Attorney General Jeff Sessions requested his resignation on March 11, 2017, along with 45 other US Attorneys, he refused to do so. Bharara was then fired.
