Bio:
James Mattis (born September 8, 1950 in Pullman, Washington) is a retired United States Marine Corps general. Prior to Obama appointing him to replace General Patraeus on August 11, 2010 and he has commanded US Joint Forces Command since 2007. He commanded several divisions throughout the Iraq War. On December 1, 2016 it was announced that the retired General would be nominated to be the Trump Administration’s Secretary of Defense.

General Mattis has a library that includes 7,000 volumes of war and military history. He is a life-long bachelor and has neither married nor had children. He has devoted his life to studying and fighting war. He is well-known for ensuring his troops are well educated prior to deployment and gives them required readings to understand the cultural norms of where they are going.
