Bio:
Elena Kagan (born April 28. 1960 in New York City, New York) is an American Supreme Court Justice. Elena grew up in the Upper West Side of NYC, developing a strong-willed an independent character that would influence her legal career. After graduating from high school, Elena attended Princeton where she earned her Bachelors degree in History in 1981. She graduated from Oxford with a Master’s of Philosophy and received her legal degree from Harvard in 1986. She was law clerk until she joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School in 1991. Elana was an Associate White House Counsel under President Bill Clinton from 1995-96. She worked as a Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy from 1997-99. President Clinton named her to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, but Congress scheduled no hearing to confirm her nomination. She returned to academia after President Clinton left office and worked there until 2009. That year, President Barack Obama nominated her to be Solicitor General. She was confirmed and served until 2010, when Justice John Paul Stevens retired from the Supreme Court. Elena was nominated to replace him. She was confirmed in August 2010 and has served on the Supreme Court ever since.

Personal Life:
Elena identifies with a Conservative Judaism. She successfully negotiated with her Orthodox rabbi as a girl in order to have her bat mitzvah her way. Thanks to her persuasiveness, Elena’s synagogue had its first formal bat mitzvah. She was a smoker as a teenager but not that much of a partier. Elena has not married and she has no children.
