Chelsea Clinton opened up about how her mom, Hillary Clinton, reacted to the devastating and horrifying riot at the Capitol on January 6. Chelsea, 40, spoke with Drew Barrymore on her daytime talk show on January 7, describing the former Secretary of State and First Lady’s initial reaction to the horrifying events. “I said, ‘Mom, you have to turn on the television,'” Chelsea recalled for The Drew Barrymore Show host, referencing the phone call she made to her mom.
“There was just silence,” Chelsea said with immense sorrow, describing what she heard from her mom on the other end of the phone call. “And then so much sadness. And, also, so much anger that this was happening,” Chelsea went on. “When we spoke again later — last night — there was this real sense of, we have to hold people accountable,” she continued.
“We have to hold the insurrectionists, the terrorists, the mob who overwhelmed our Capitol [accountable]. We have to hold those individuals accountable and we have to hold the president accountable,” Chelsea went on, referencing President Donald Trump fomenting his supporters to take to Capitol Hill. Chelsea went on to say that Trump “incited [his supporters], egged them on.” Although Chelsea shared the she and her mom thought it was “good” that social media platforms suspended or blocked Trump from use, it was still “insufficient, to put it mildly. We have to stop not only the amplification but the injection of hate and instability and violence that he has personified over the last [four] years.” Following a rally that Trump held in Washington, D.C. on January 6, his supporters descended on the Capitol and disrupted sessions of Congress and the Senate as they voted to certify the election of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Rioters were able to get into the building where they looted and destroyed federal property. Hillary Clinton memorably ran against Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, and has since continued to support the democratic party and incoming Biden/Harris administration.
