All Billie Eilish wanted to do was wear a tank top on a hot, sunny day in Los Angeles. And somehow, that turned into a massive incident that led to strangers on the internet criticizing the 18-year-old singer’s body. The Grammy winner opened up about the October day where she decided to forgo her usual baggy clothing in an interview with Vanity Fair (watch above) while talking about the biggest and weirdest rumors she’s heard about herself.
Aside from the rumors that she’s pregnant and worships Satan (false and false), Billie’s had to hear about people talking about how she apparently gained weight. “There’s this picture of me running from my car to my brother’s front door on like a 110 degree day in a tank top. And people were like, ‘Damn, Billie got fat!'” Billie said in her November 30 interview. “And I’m like, “Nope, this is how I look, you’ve just never seen it before!’ So that’s the most current [rumor].”
Billie explained in an April 2020 interview with Dazed that she started wearing her signature baggy clothing because of body insecurities. Though her body image has improved, she continued rocking the style because she enjoyed it. It’s a no-win situation no matter what she wears, though. “If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a s—,” Eilish said, adding, “Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it, and judge me for it. Why?”
She’s called out the body shamers who surfaced online after seeing her tank top photos. The “Bad Guy” singer reposted a powerful video from influencer Chizi Duru, who stressed that society needs to “normalize real bodies.” Billie said in her Vanity Fair interview that she’s proud that her body positivity has impacted fans. “I love having kids relate to me, and tell me that I make them feel comfortable in their bodies. If I can do anything I want to do that.”
