Olivia Culpo, known to fans for her stunning photos and classic style, opened up about a battle she has been fighting. In an Instagram post from November 19, the model, 28, disclosed to her over four million followers that she underwent surgery for her endometriosis the day prior to sharing her post. “Yesterday I had surgery for my endometriosis,” she began her caption, which accompanied three images of Olivia — two in a hospital bed, and one showing her body in recovery.

“Not a very glamorous post but I felt like I needed to share this to create more awareness around this disease,” she continued. Olivia went on to describe endometriosis as a “condition where tissue from the uterine lining decides to grow in other random parts of your body, causing pain. This can interfere with fertility and overall health and honestly – happiness.”

Adding to the discomfort, Olivia further explained how endometriosis is “excruciatingly painful but nearly impossible to see through an ultrasound (unless you have endometrioma/chocolate cysts on your ovaries- that’s what I had). I have been in agony for years around my period and I was misdiagnosed countless times by doctors,” she continued.

The former Miss USA detailed the ways in which past physicians misdiagnosed her, and the remedies they prescribed. “I know a lot of people out there in the Endo community are familiar with these diagnoses which is why I am so passionate about this,” she explained in her caption. Olivia also shared her gratitude to her physician, Dr. Smitha Vilasagar, MD, FACOG, as well as the staff at Atrium Health, “who took care of” her throughout her surgery and immediate recovery.

Finally, Olivia concluded her post with a powerful, resounding message to those who struggle with endometriosis. “To anyone out there who has endometriosis, I understand the depression, and overall loneliness that can occur with a condition  that is so painful yet so hard to be interpreted by other people outside of the body,” she said.

“It’s hard when chronic pain is not validated and you don’t get an answer or understanding. To my Endo warriors, I will continue to spread more awareness around endometriosis so that your symptoms can be validated. You are not alone and you are so strong!!!!” Olivia has divulged her battle with endometriosis in the past and received incredible praise and support from her fans and followers. We’re wishing Olivia a speedy recovery during this unprecedented time.
