Fellow Supergirl fans! This episode was a whole lot of action that saved the most important developments nearly right to the very finish. But, that doesn’t mean there weren’t some good things in between.
The Set Up
An alien family gets pulled over by a cop. Except he’s not a cop at all, he’s a Cadmus agent. He has the family hunted down and they’re all captured. As we then learn when we’re taken into the D.E.O. after the harrowing moment, this is the 20th alien abduction since Cadmus received the alien registry.
While on the subject of alien registries and people who stole them, J’onn declares that Jeremiah is an enemy combatant– if found he’s to be arrested on site.
Risky Business
Kara suggests to Mean Editor (yup, that’s his name, don’t wear it out) that she write an article on the alien abduction and Cadmus’ connection to it, but Mean Editor isn’t into it. To entice him, she suggests that he write the article and interview Supergirl. And, promises an exclusive to boot. It works. He is enticed. Silly Mean Editor.
Supergirl does end up stopping by for an interview, but Mean Editor isn’t down with her “half truths.” The interview is a total bust.
While Kara’s worries center on her career and journalism, this episode is quite different for Alex. She’s still struggling with accepting Jeremiah’s misdeeds. At the alien dive bar, she even tells Maggie that she believes he’s a good man. Speaking of the alien dive bar, Cadmus infiltrates the hang out, and Winn’s girlfriend gets taken. Alex tries to save her but the agents turn their guns on her. Thankfully, Maggie comes to her rescue, but Lyra is still taken away.
Back at the D.E.O., Winn freaks. But, not as bad as Alex does while interrogating one of the agents. And by interrogating, I mean Alex nearly beating him to a bloody pulp, demanding to know where Cadmus is. J’onn stops her before the situation becomes dire.
Later, Jeremiah shows up at Alex’s apartment. He asks her for her help, citing that he’s a double agent and he’s actually on her side. She almost agrees to help him when he suddenly transforms into J’onn, who was merely testing her. Considering she failed that test miserably, he suspends her and she is not happy.
Desperate Times
At Cadmus’ post, Lillian tells Jeremiah he’s the only Superman they need, as the family from the start of the episode gets brought in with a slew of other aliens.
As this happens, Alex begs Kara to appeal to J’onn and tell him to put her back on the case. While Kara doesn’t agree with his methods, she explains that she does think his judgement is sound. Which seems to be pretty accurate given whats going on with Jeremiah at the moment.
At CatCo, Kara runs into Lena, who she forgot she made plans with because of her stress over Supergirl business and the article she’s itching to write but can’t. Lena tells her to blog it herself. Kara then asks Lena if Luthor Corp has technology that could help find the lost aliens and Lena suggests maybe there’s even some evidence her mother left behind.
Lena has her assistant dig up dirt on Lillian and the company, but it turns out that the assistant is working for Lillian who tells her to stop Lena.
On the subject of dysfunctional familial relationships, Alex goes on a mission to Cadmus where she runs into Jeremiah. He explains to her that he’s been sending the aliens back to their homes, citing the fact that it was a merciful move considering Lillian was going to kill them. Alex tells him that it’s still a reprehensible thing to do considering most of the aliens fleed to Earth for refuge. Jeremiah argues that this is what he has to do because Cadmus is holding her and Kara’s lives over his head to go along with their plans.
Desperate Measures
Kara is hesitant to blog her own article, but Mon-El tells her if she feels its the right thing to do, it is. It takes a little more prodding by her new boyfriend, but she does it. Almost immediately following the article being published, Lena calls her to tell her a major development. She is then attacked and Supergirl comes to her rescue. Tells her she knows where Cadmus and the missing aliens are.
Alex tries to stop Lillian from launching the ship with the aliens because of Kara’s article exposing them. Alex asks if Jeremiah is with her and tells him to make this right. Finally, he proves Alex’s trust in him isn’t in vain, and helps her. He demands that Lillian give her the override code to stop the ship. She refuses, of course.
Alex goes to stop the ship from the inside as Jeremiah battles on the outside. Alex frees Lyra and tells her to get the aliens off the ship. She goes into the cockpit to try and stop it but the ship takes off. Alex enlists the D.E.O.’s help to stop it from going to space. Their methods don’t work and so Supergirl flies to try and help slow the ship down. Kara’s strength doesn’t seem to be enough to stop it, but Alex cheers her on, giving her that extra push, and she manages to pull it off. She slows the ship in an epic sisterly bonding moment.
Once the alien exodus dust has settled (for now), Kara comes to her office at CatCo to find her stuff in a box. As it turns out, she’s fired. Mean Editor didn’t take too kindly to her self-published article and schools her on what good reporting actually is. To rub salt in the wound, he tells her before she pulled this move, he was actually rooting for her.
Alex apologizes to J’onn but says that what he did was cruel. He tells her he was protecting her, but admits was wrong and he also apologizes. Alex hugs him and makes them agree to stop doing the wrong things for the right reasons (moral of the episode, y’all). He agrees and tells her that he hopes one day they get Jeremiah back one day. She’s confident they will.
Mon-El shows up at Kara’s apartment with pot stickers (AKA comfort food) and tells her she’ll get another job. She lamets that she doesn’t want another one, reporting is her calling– she wants to help people. He reminds her that Supergirl does. She says Supergirl is what she does, but Kara is who she is. Mon-El says she has so much to offer and not to let anyone else tell her differently. And, in the very next breath, Kara goes against her initial assertion and says that maybe being Supergirl and having him is enough.
The episode doesn’t end there, though. A spaceship arrives on Earth… with aliens who, as evidenced by the trailer, are probably Mon-El’s mommy and daddy. Oh yeah, and he’s the Prince of Daxom. Duh.
Setting Things Up For A Fall
Guys, I hate to break this to you, but strictly being Supergirl is not going to be what Kara wants in the long run. How do I know? Well, I was an Arrow fan long before Supergirl came along and I know this trope well. Like Oliver Queen, most superheroes (if not all) struggle between being the hero and the person (or in this case, alien). When they try to be either or, it never works. Being a superhero is all about accepting who they are in costume and out of it.
And, while Mon-El means well, his way of comforting Kara is only temporary. She should try to right her journalistic wrongs. She is allowed to be sad that she had a major career blow. Only focusing on her Supergirl good deeds is merely masking the problem. One, that will inevitably come back to bite her and Mon-El, and probably their cute, new relationship right in the butt.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Kara will be satisfied with being all Supergirl all the time?
