WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD — PROCEED WITH CAUTION
While speaking to the creator and mastermind behind the Wizarding World at the Fantastic Beasts premiere in New York City in Nov. 10, J.K. Rowling agreed that, considering Newt Scamander’s family tree, there could be a possibility of Harry Potter, aka Daniel Radcliffe, returning at the end of the franchise.
You see, decades after Newt’s adventures in New York, his grandson will marry Luna Lovegood, Harry’s quirky Ravenclaw friend and devoted member of Dumbledore’s Army. If the new series follows the structure of the Harry Potter books, it stands to reason we could see a flash-forward in time and watch as Newt meets Harry, Hermione, Ron and the whole original Potter crew at the wedding of Luna and Rowlf Scamander.
But is J.K. thinking in those terms for the final movie?
“No, no,” she admitted fervently, adding, “Having said that, the five movies span 19 years; that’s a coincidence. So we’re running from 1926 in this movie and the [last movie] will finish in 1945, which for hardcore Potter fans, will tell them quite a lot about the story we’re telling.” Um, yeah, it does! But in case you’re not following, allow me to share a bit of wizarding history.
‘Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them’ Pics
Two major events occurred in 1945 in the wizarding world: The first, and perhaps most significant, is the historic duel between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. This is the fight that ends with Grindelwald in Nurmengard and Dumbledore in possession of the Elder Wand. Now, this is probably the event that J.K. is alluding to, as we now know Dumbledore will appear in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel. However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also point out that in 1945, a boy by the name of Tom Riddle also graduated from Hogwarts — and we all know what happens after that! Perhaps this could open up a whole new franchise?!
Until then, we’ll just keep hoping that J.K. changes her mind about fast-forwarding in time for the final Fantastic Beasts movie — and we’re not alone in that. Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the original Harry Potter films, is ready for the call and is even ready to take some drastic measures to ensure she’s prepared. “I’m trying not to age before that movie catches up!” Evanna also told me at the Fantastic Beasts premiere. “Maybe I’ll do that cryogenics thing and go, ‘Wake me up when the time comes and Fantastic Beasts needs me!”
