There are some questions as old as time: What is the meaning of life? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Who is Becky with the good hair? Well, as of Aug. 2, we have at least one of those answers! Entertainment Weekly sat down with Diana Gordon, the head songwriter of Beyonce’s “Sorry,” and she dropped some facts on the world!
Diana was shocked by the backlash the song caused when fans became desperate to figure out who Becky really is. “I laughed, like this is so silly. Where are we living?” said Diana. “I was like, ‘What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information?”
As a matter of fact, Diana insinuated that that information, despite all of the fan research, was actually incorrect. “Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?” So, is she saying that there is no Becky? That’s certainly how it sounds! Though Beyonce made the song her own, it was mostly written by Diana, so chances are any Becky the song was actually about is an unknown.
“The idea started in my mind but it’s not mine anymore,” she explained. “It was very funny and amusing to me to watch it spread over the world. If it’s not going to be me saying it, and the one person in the world who can say it is Beyoncé, I was f—ing happy.” Wow! If only she knew that Beyonce saying it would cause innocent people like Rachel Roy to get a TON of unwanted attention, and even have her computer hacked!
Queen Bey obivously didn’t want to hurt anyone either, according to Diana. “No. I don’t think she expected it,” she said. “I saw her at her Formation tour. She had a pajama party; we laughed, we danced, we hugged it out. But I didn’t say much about it at the time because I wanted to give her space.”
