Most people would just love to be in a music video with the legendary Madonna, 57, but Prince, 57, was not like most people. When Madge called him to talk him into filming a video for the song they wrote together, the “Let’s Go Crazy” singer totally shot the Material Girl down!
In some of the freshest shade around, Prince’s ex-girlfriend, Anna Fantastic, 42, dished about Madonna’s heartfelt tribute to the “Purple Rain” singer at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. “Well, I don’t want to sound like Simon Cowell,” she told TMZ, “but she’s had loads of iconic performances but [the BBMAs] wasn’t one of them.”
Ye-ouch! That was just the beginning, as Anna revealed she “was there when [Madonna and Prince] recorded their duet together. She really wanted to do a music video and he refused.” Prince and Madonna teamed up for 1989’s “Love Song,” off her Like A Prayer album. It was around that time she was also going trough a divorce with Sean Penn, 55, and when she played that up for sympathy, Prince still told her no! Don’t be like Prince – say “yes” to
“They didn’t seem like they were really good friends,” Anna said, suggesting he and Madonna became close sometime later in life. As for “Love Song,” Anna said Prince “liked the song but didn’t want to do a video. I even said, ‘you and Madonna in a video could be really cool. And he said, ‘Me and Madonna in a video? No thanks.'”
Harsh words for Madonna, but that’s not the only hate the “Like A Prayer” singer has received over her Prince tribute. The Purple One’s fans took to social media to blast Madonna with hilarious memes, trolling her and Stevie Wonder, 66, for their versions of “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Purple Rain.”
The biggest troll over this tribute has to be BET. Mere minutes after it was done, the network rolled out a promo, trashing the tribute as lame before promising a better one at the BET Awards in June. Yikes. If people are so protective of Prince, maybe it’s a good thing Madonna didn’t make that video with him.
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Would a video for “Love Song” have been epic? Or do you think Prince made the right decision.
