During the short interview, Mayte was frequently wiping tears from her eyes. She will be returning to Minnesota for Prince’s funeral. She also nodded her head when asked if she’s been trying to keep Prince’s memory alive.
Prince and Mayte were married from 1996 to 2000. Following the announcement of Prince’s death, Mayte released this statement: “I can’t even think of the words of what I’m feeling. This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated. I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He’s with our son now.”
The couple had one son together, Boy Gregory. He died one week after his birth due to Pfeiffer syndrome, a genetic disorder. According to one of Prince’s dancers, he never fully “recovered” from his son’s sudden death. Mayte got pregnant again, but she later miscarried. Prince had wanted to be a father so badly.
Prince was found dead at the age of 57 on April 21 in his Paisley Park home. An autopsy has been performed on the Oscar-winning singer to determine the cause of his death. Just days before he was found dead, Prince allegedly overdosed on Percocet.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Prince’s family and friends during this difficult time.
