Heading into the summer finale, Callie is “feeling kind of at peace,” Maia Mitchell told HollywoodLife.com exclusively following the intense sex scene her character went through with Brandon (David Lambert) on The Fosters. We know that this week, Callie will go up against the court room, but she’ll also have to deal with the repercussions of hooking up with Brandon — even though, they are in love.
“Everything has been so up in the air for her. She’s been sort of not in control of anything. She’s been fighting and fighting and fighting for this adoption, and I think at this point she’s kind of accepting that she’s not gonna be a part of the family,” Maia told HollywoodLife.com, adding that in Callie’s mind, she could finally be with “the boy that she’s in love with.”
“I think she’s really choosing to put all her eggs in that basket and they are in love and they have been having this chemistry bubbling and they’ve wanted to be together,” she said. “Now I think she’s just choosing to love him and to be loved back. So you really see them, both Brandon and Callie, in this kind of state of euphoria, I think, when you see them in the aftermath of our last episode.”
So, will the euphora last? Well, maybe not. “You see them really struggling and battling,” Maia added. “Now they’ve felt what that’s like and being with each other and letting themselves go there— it’s a bit more difficult for her to take it back. And also they have had sex. What are the repercussions of that if she were to be adopted? Would they tell the moms? Would they live with this kind of secret? It’s definitely not a good situation that either of them are in.”
And that’s something we’ll see in the finale. Maia explained that Callie’s not selfish at all, so she’s still trying to figure out if telling her moms would be the right thing, should the adoption go through.
Oh, and as for that sex scene — Maia and David totally were professionals about it, of course. “I think they both probably had been wanting this for so long, so it was really kind of satisfying from an actor’s point of view,” she said. “We’ve been playing these characters and they’ve wanted to be together for so long so we really wanted to play that truth. They’re young and they’re sexy and they’re trying to discover that part of themselves. For Callie, she’s never had sex before— not really, not sex when she’s in love, so I really wanted it to be natural and really yummy. I think we did it [laughs]. Those scenes, you just need to get on with it and me and David are such good friends, it was totally comfortable between us and we’re on the same page.”
Do you think Callie & Brandon should be together in the end? The Fosters summer finale airs Aug. 17 at 8PM on ABC Family.
