Ricky Gervais is known for below-the-belt jokes but he might have taken things a bit too far during the Jan. 11 Golden Globes. Ricky hosted the Globes from 2010-2012 and he was notorious for his incredibly mean-spirited jabs. But when he took the stage to present the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy we never would have thought he would take a swipe at Katie Holmes!
Ricky said that stars will do anything to be famous and after tip toeing around for a few minutes, he finally started naming celebs that would do “anything” to be famous. He started off with Meryl Streep, which was clearly a joke and then he said George Clooney, which again is a joke. But then things got very uncomfortable when he said Katie’s name.
He says: “I’m not even looking at Katie Holmes.” The whole audience sort of gasped, it was awkward! Especially since Katie was there presenting an award. But it sort of seemed like he was saying that she was only where she was in Hollywood because of her marriage in 2006 to Tom Cruise. Yes, she is a great actress but it definitely seems that’s what he was implying.
Quvenzhane Wallis was also nominated in this category and Ricky actually praised himself for not pulling a John Travolta by mispronouncing her name. Well … he did! It was pretty funny and fans erupted on Twitter in anger when he did it.
Ricky is known for his intense jokes and this was definitely one of them!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Ricky dissing Katie?
