When I think of pro gay marriage industries, film, theater and music immediately come to mind, but sports does not follow close behind, especially not wrestling. Until now! Pro wrestling legend Stone Cold Steve Austin (real name Steven James Anderson) has spoken out and his sentiment is strongly pro same-sex marriage. Awesome!
Although the podcast was recorded in 2013, Steve’s powerful message is only now beginning to circulate online, which is quite frankly surprising considering how outspoken the athlete is on the topic. His approach is seriously no holes barred!
“I don’t give a s**t if two guys, two gals, guy-gal, whatever it is — I believe that any human being in America, or any human being in the goddamn world, that wants to be married [can be]. If it’s the same-sex, more power to them.”
Steve, 49, isn’t just saying the words either — he preaches them passionately, getting aggravated at the fact that there are still certain people out there who disagree. “What also chaps my a**, some of these churches, have the high horse that they get on and say ‘we as a church do not believe in that.’ Which one of these [people] talked to God, and God said that same-sex marriage was a no-can-do?” Steve barks.
For someone known in his prime as the “toughest S.O.B. in the WWE,” it’s not surprising that the wrestler isn’t afraid to share his opinions. But that doesn’t mean it was easy for him to speak out like this, so he deserves a lot of credit.
Now that Steve’s pro gay marriage podcast is finally going viral, it will be interesting to see how the WWE community responds. Could this most unlikely of sources become a beacon of hope for equality? Can’t wait to find out!
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Will Steve’s pro-equality sentiments spread more deeply into the WWE? Listen to the podcast below (beware: there’s a lot of explicit language) and let us know!
