“It’s not just that things have changed, it’s that they’re inside out.” That line, spoken by Aria (Lucy Hale) on the Jan. 7 winter premiere of Pretty Little Liars, may have been about her relationship with Ezra (Ian Harding), but it really applies to everyone and everything in Rosewood at the moment. By the time the hour was up, everything we thought we knew about the town’s residents — every relationship we’ve loved over the past four seasons — was completely turned around.
Let’s start with Aria and Ezra, who began the episode apart, yet ended the episode… well, I’m not exactly sure how they ended things. But then again, neither do they. Ezra asked Aria for a second chance after she graduates high school, which is simultaneously one of the most romantic and least appropriate thing a teacher can say to a student.
And rather than answer him with words, they kissed!

I know the ‘Ezria’ fandom probably went wild when the former couple locked lips, but I’m holding my applause. Not only am I firmly on Team Jake (Ryan Guzman) at the moment, but you know, there’s that whole EZRA TRIED TO KILL HER MANY TIMES thing that I simply cannot overlook.
Speaking of people who tried to kill someone they’re now dating, Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) also hit a bit of a snag in their ever-complicated relationship this week. After bickering with Paige about swimming for the millionth time, Emily felt compelled to tell her that Alison (Sasha Pieterse) kissed her one time.
Emily assured Paige that it meant nothing, on account of Ali being an emotionless monster, but I’m not sure Paige was convinced. This revelation only makes me more excited for the inevitable Emily-Ali hookup now that Alison is back from the ‘dead.’ Love me some lesbian drama!
Of course, no couple experienced more heartbreak this week than Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Hanna (Ashley Benson), who had a tearful reunion… followed by an even more tearful goodbye. The trouble began when Hanna asked Caleb about Miranda (Nicole Anderson), which means she clearly stopped watching Ravenswood after the pilot, or else she’d know that Miranda literally poses no earthly threat. Still, Caleb’s caginess about what he’s been up to led Hanna to assume he’s been cheating — and that’s when everything fell apart.
Obviously Caleb wanted to tell Hanna what’s really been going on in Ravenswood, but he didn’t want her to get mixed up in his supernatural shenanigans, so he did what any flawless human would do: He got into his car, drove off into the night, and sobbed in private.
Thankfully, not every couple was left on the rocks this week. Toby (Keegan Allen) returned to Rosewood, and with a little help from Spencer (Troian Bellisario), he got Radley to admit that his mother’s death was not a suicide!
In Ali news, the liars discovered that another girl went missing on the same night as Ali in Cortland, just one town over from Ravenswood. Per Hanna’s expert sleuthing — though Spencer certainly wouldn’t agree, as she was too busy giving Hanna the stink-eye all night — it’s now possible that Sara’s body was mistakenly placed in Ali’s casket. (I think.)
Between the Ali situation in Rosewood, the Sara situation in Cortland and the ghost situation in Ravenswood, I have to ask… when did Pennsylvania become the craziest state in America?!
