‘Glee’ Recap: Adam Lambert Arrives & [Spoiler] Cheats

‘Glee’ is finally back! After a four-week hiatus, we returned to Lima, Ohio to see the New Directions take on epic Lady Gaga and Katy Perry hits when Will challenged them to take a step out of their comfort zones — and figure out their relationships.

In New York City, Kurt (Chris Colfer) decided that while both Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana  (Naya Rivera) have been making major moves in their career, he needs something new. So, why not start a band?

New Directions Challenge Themselves

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) knows how to challenge the New Directions. So when they learned that their competition at Nationals this year will be “Throat Explosion,” a creative, renowned show choir.

So for a challenge, he decided to split the group into those who identified themselves as more of a Lady Gaga type and those who were more like Katy Perry — and assigned them to sing the songs of the other artist.

Sam (Chord Overstreet) attempted to use that sexy charm to impress Nurse Penny (Phoebe Strole), and when he came out singing “Applause,” he was shirtless and wearing just black pants and sexy wings. He was joined by Gaga’d out Artie (Kevin McHale) and Blaine (Darren Criss). However, Marley (Melissa Benoist) also joined them — but was dressed in a head-to-toe Katy Perry outfit.

Marley Feels Overly Pressured By Jake

Relationship-wise, we could see the tension brewing between Marley and Jake (Jacob Artist) throughout the episode, and it didn’t help when he started helping “the new Santana,” Bree (Erinn Westbrook), with the sexy choreography for the Cheerios.

After the performance, Marley decided that yes, she is a Katy, and that she wouldn’t change for anybody — a decision that got her suspended from the Glee Club for the week. Jake tried making her feel better by bringing her back over to his place, where things got a little more intense than she wanted — leading him to go and see Bree and “go somewhere private!” Ugh!

For Sam, he quickly learned that Penny had lied about being a Gaga fan (she was a Katy, like him) and they bonded over their love for “vanilla” taste — and they finally kissed . . . twice!

Those representing Katy, took on two completely sides of the iconic singer. First they took off all their makeup, and all the costumes and sang an acoustic version of “Wide Awake” (that I’m running to download) — and later, they pulled off their clothes and on their loin clothes for an intense jungle-filled performane of “Roar.”

Starchild ‘Marries The Night,’ But Elliot Wins Over Kurt

Meanwhile, in New York, we were finally introduced to Elliot “Starchild” Gilbert (Adam Lambert) who eagerly showed up in full costume and makeup to audition for Kurt’s band. However, Kurt was already worried enough about being overshadowed by Rachel and Santana, so he immediately didn’t like him from his dramatic (and amazing) performance of Gaga’s “Marry the Night.”

However, Rachel — who didn’t want to join the band so she could focus on Funny Girl — and Santana talked him into reconsidering. It just happened to work out perfectly since a makeup-free Elliot wandered into the diner and begged Kurt to add him to the band — and he agreed!

The band also includes Dani (Demi Lovato), Santana’s adorable new girlfriend. They all tried to come up a name for the band when Rachel simply came up with “Pamela Lansbury,” which secured that she had to join the band. Naturally, Kurt made a reference to Barbara Streisand being able to multi-task — which of course Rachel couldn’t say no to.

The episode ended with both the New Directions and the Pamela Lansburies singing Katy’s Roar” — where Jake had both Marley and Bree in the audience. Ugh!
