Demi Lovato has alluded to her breakup with Joe Jonas as being the catalyst to her emotional and physical breakdown — and now in her song “Mistake” on Unbroken she’s standing up for herself and telling the 21-year-old Jo bro he screwed up.
“When I first heard ‘Mistake,’ it was the lyrics that first caught my attention,” Demi explains on the music application Spotify in a section called “About Unbroken.” “I was really intrigued by the fact that the girl had just been broken up with and it was the other person’s fault and it was the other person’s greatest mistake. I thought that was really interesting. It was a different take on a breakup.”
She adds, “Rather than sit around feeling heart broken, you can listen to it and feel almost empowered thinking, ‘I’m not going to let this get me down. It was HIS greatest mistake.’ So I love the message of the song and I hope you do too!”
Demi and Joe were best friends for years before they finally dated in the beginning of 2010. However, things didn’t work out between the two of them and it’s been widely reported Joe’s dad was the one who broke off the relationship with Demi. Almost immediately after, Joe began dating Ashley Greene — and even brought her on his tour WITH Demi.
